About

สวัสดีครับ

My name is Tam, a early 30 year old Thai male from Bangkok. I am certified Thai teacher and have been giving 1-on-1 Thai lessons for more than 7 years. I started this blog to explain anything related to Thai language or even culture because through my teaching years It has been a lot of questions from my students language-related questions or culture-related questions. Some of them quite surprise me, They allows me think about my culture where I come from and how to explain it so that people from complete different culture could understand — That’s is so enjoyable — Now, I want to archive and expand some of my explanation to broader audience that why I write this blog.

My Journey through language.

As I Thai person is typical to fail to speak English, yeah I am one of them. Most of Thai (who are privilege enough to afford eduction) has been introduce to English since a very young ages around 5 years old. Which we call ‘อนุบาล’. Then you spend ‘ประถม’ in the age of 6 – 12 after that ‘มัธยมต้น’ another 3 years – after มัธยมต้น (ต้น, which is a prefix for beginning point, first-which) After this you can decide whether you will continue with มัธยมปลาย which will probably end up in another 4 years in university มหาวิทยาลัย or you would go to vocational education where you definitely will learn English less. Then you see how much will spend on school but still have very poor English. The problem is, as a lot of Thai students claim. We learn so much about grammar but never really put it into practice and speaking. I am the one who struggle with that I spend my whole in education and fail.

in the age of 20 or something after 15 years learning to communicate in English I failed. It was the moment that I was in a filmmaking workshop with a lot of international people but I fail to speak and fail to speak up my thought. It embrassed me. At the time I was thinking to myself that If there’s something that I really don’t what to happen in my life it would have been ‘I can’t speak English my whole life’ That I can’t let it happen.

At the age of 21 — I started to make a goal not to just speak English but I want to understand everything English. Then I started, First I was in university at the time I think have two 2 more years before I get the degree. I spend 2 days after classed learning English — In just a very basic English lesson with native speaker — You will be surprise how quite the room is so I didn’t really able to speak at all — then on the week I would to another English school for writing and stuff. I started to read magazine like Times about like The Wizard of Oz — After the graduation I was try to find a job but I didn’t go went so I asked my mom to support me so I can learn English and find a better job. My mom even go further with the idea. She said you should study master aboard. We agreed. After graduate at the age of 22 while a lot of my friend started to get first jobs I was unemployed and want to reach my only goal at the time. I was strange feeling sometimes even depressed when you see you friends getting first jobs doing what they wanted to do. I was down sometime but I know what I was doing will bring me something for me in the future- At the age of 23 I went to English every

My name is Tam. a 31-year old Thai male from Bangkok. I have been teaching Thai online for almost 7 years. I enjoy explain Thai stuff to my students and I become a way from me to learn something from different culture that why I started this blog – so I help more people to learn Thai.
